The Terrace Chalet project is a testament to Bean Buro's ability to blend the old with the new. Tasked with refurbishing a 1,000-square-foot apartment located on the third floor of a Tong Lau - tenement buildings built in the late 19th century to the 1960s in Hong Kong, the design team delivered a space that is open, flexible, and harmoniously connected with the tranquil atmosphere of the street. The apartment is situated in a peaceful neighborhood hidden in the hilly areas of Central, a pedestrian-only street just steps away from the vibrant SOHO district.
The design team drew inspiration from The Muller House, a house designed by the late architect Adolf Loose in 1930. The main concept was to increase functions and activities at the threshold between inside and outside, to bring the street atmosphere in and to connect the interior with the external scenery. The idea of inhabiting such an in-between space was central to the project.
The apartment's unique features include a concealed walk-in storage at the entrance with full-height mirrors to virtually enlarge the foyer space. An open kitchen with a bar and two stools was created to enhance the openness of the apartment. The area along the window is conceptualized as a large wooden theatre box, with a raised platform and large operable windows for bird viewing, street watching, exercising, working, and gardening.
The design team faced several challenges during the project, including integrating a long row of planters at the window sill for flowers, creating a dialogue with the external trees. A calming muted green color paint was used on the central joinery element to further correspond to the green environment outside. Despite these challenges, the team successfully delivered a design that is both innovative and respectful of the building's historical context.
The Terrace Chalet project started in March 2017 and was completed in November 2017. It was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation. The project showcases Bean Buro's commitment to creating spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and in harmony with their surroundings.
